Description

The coin belongs to the group of provincial coins from the East, which is very rare in the west of the Roman Empire. Of the over 4,600 known coins from the Saalburg, only 6 examples belong to this group.

The Aes shows the bust of the Emperor Septimius Severus on the front. On the reverse you can see an eagle with open wings and a wreath in its beak and a bundle of lightning under its fangs. The Greek inscription on the reverse reveals: The coin was minted in the city of Philippopolis (Thrace), at the time when Statilius Barbarus was governor there.
