Description
The altar for the goddess Fortuna was found in the fort's bathing complex. It had been reused there to cover a canal, but may have originally been placed there. The dedicatory inscription says that the prefect Caius Mogillonius Priscianus dedicated this altar to the goddess. Mogillonius was probably commander of the 2nd mounted Raeter cohort in the 2nd quarter of the 2nd century, which was stationed at the Saalburg from 135 to around 275 AD.
Fortuna, the goddess of good luck, was of outstanding importance to the soldiers. She will be as Fortuna balnearis often worshiped in the fort baths. Commanders consecrated lavishly decorated holy altars, which documented the significance of the cult within the framework of the official army religion by mentioning the donor's name and the name of the troops.
