Description

Terra sigillata vessel of the form Dragendorff 37 in the style of Satto from the Sigillata pottery of Blickweiler (Saarpfalz district). To the left of a tree wrapped in vines you can see a seated man dressed in Phrygian costume. To the right, Mars is walking with a lance in his hand and a tropaion (temporary monument to a battle made of pieces of armor and weapons) on his left shoulder.

The depiction probably shows the judgment of Paris. According to ancient mythology, the Trojan king's son Paris was given the decision to choose the most beautiful of all goddesses. He chooses the goddess Venus, who in return promises him the beautiful Helena as his wife. The subsequent robbery of Helena, who was actually married to a Greek king, is considered to be the trigger for the ten-year Trojan War.
