Description

On the Staffelberg (Upper Franconia, Bavaria), which dominates the landscape, there was already a mighty castle complex during the early La Tène period, whose residents dominated the Upper Main region. Despite considerable infrastructure construction and connections to the southern Alpine region, it was unable to become a “princely seat” and disappeared during the “Celtic migrations”.

It was only in the late Celtic period that people settled here again and founded a city in the newly structured settlement landscape. We still don't know the economic basis of this single oppidum in Franconia, but once again there is evidence of connections to the south, and its elaborate fortifications clearly speak a language of power and representation.
