Description

The openwork disc brooch shows the goddess Victoria standing on a globe and holding a palm branch in her left hand. In front of her sits an eagle carrying a laurel wreath in its beak.

The motif of Victoria on the globe is a reflection of the famous bronze statue that stood in the Curia, the meeting place of the Senate, in the Forum in Rome. During the Roman Empire it appeared in almost all art forms, including on coins and lamps. The victory symbolism of this brooch points to the military sector. Its wearer will certainly have been a soldier.

Brooches (clothing pins) like these were used in ancient times both as jewelry and to fasten garments.
