Description
The hollow cast right thumb of a larger-than-life bronze statue was found in the Principia in front of the flag sanctuary along with other fragments. The massive index finger, on the other hand, comes from the embankment behind the defensive wall. Both fragments belong to bronze statues from the early 3rd century AD, which depicted Roman emperors in military regalia with breastplates.
Remains of bronze statues of the emperors have been found everywhere along the Limes. They usually stood in the cross hall in front of the flag shrine. The statues are to be interpreted as honorary statues of the troop units and their commanders for the reigning emperor. They were a symbol of the troops' loyalty and devotion to their commander in chief - the emperor.
