Description

This sandal adorned a delicate woman's foot. Its cross strap is decorated with fine gilding. The sole is cut out in the outline of the toes, the bottom is nailed along the edge. The small nails protect against wear, hold the outsole and insole together and fasten the cross strap.

The gemstone, a topaz, was not originally part of this sandal. But it was found in the same well as this one. Such a filled-in well shaft provided a moist environment with no air in which organic material such as leather could be preserved.
