Description

This closed women's shoe is almost completely preserved with the branding and part of the nailed outsole. It was restored immediately after the excavation in 1907 and lined with reddish leather. The upper leather is richly decorated with small punched out circles and edge ornaments. Two eyelets close together were used to lace the shoe.

The shoe described here was one of the earliest leather finds in the Saalburg and probably dates from the first half of the second century.
