Description

The small oak sword, which was found in a well in the village just outside the Saalburg gates, resembles a gladius in shape. The simple carving may have been used in the hand of a child at play.

The interpretation of archaeological finds as children's toys is not always clear; despite great similarities, there are also differences in the use and meaning of toys. In ancient times, dolls and other toys were often given to deceased children's graves. This shows that play was assigned high importance to children's' development. In addition to having fun, games and toys prepare children for life in the cultural environment into which they are born. The toy sword from the village in front of the fort bears eloquent testimony to this.
