Description

The comb has serrations on both sides with different densities of teeth. On the right it shows a simple dot pattern. It was carved from boxwood, which was not native to the North Western Provinces in Roman times. The comb probably came to the Saalburg as a luxury item from the south.

Combs for hair care were used equally by women and men (including for beards) in Roman times. Made of wood or bone and richly decorated, they were considered a piece of jewelry in the hands of women.
