Description

The flat shell bottle with a short stem base was blown in a two-part mold. A thin glass thread runs in two rows around the short, wide neck. Several very similar bottles in the shape of a scallop - with or without handles - are kept in museums in Cologne, Bonn and Xanten.

Shell-shaped vessels - shallow bowls and bottles - seem to have been particularly popular in the Rhineland in the 3rd and early 4th centuries. The production sites for shell vessels can certainly be found in the Rhineland.
