Description

The spherical cup made of colorless glass had four large colored nubs on the wall, alternating in yellow and green-blue. There were small yellow glass dots in the middle of each one. A strong yellow glass thread was placed all around directly below the chipped edge.

Metal vessels whose walls were decorated with applied gemstones or glass pastes are considered to be the models for the late antique Nuppenglasses. The Nuppenglasses represented an affordable replacement. Their main distribution in the Rhineland makes it likely that they came from a Cologne workshop.
