Description

The 4 liter jug from the grave of the “Celtic Prince” comes from Celtic production, but is based on Etruscan models. Studies have shown remains of honey inside the pot. It is assumed that unfermented honey wine was given to the dead person's grave. A man sits cross-legged in a central position on the edge of the jug. He wears composite armor over a robe with half-length sleeves and shorts. He is accompanied by two sphinxes, hybrid creatures with animal bodies and human facial features. A mythological motif that is widespread in the Mediterranean region and originally comes from the Near East is probably depicted here. The Lord of the Animals (Despotes Theron) is also known from the Celtic world. It may even be an image of the “Celtic Prince” from Glauberg at a young age.
