Description
The lion stands upright with its head held high and its muscles tense. The mouth is wide open. The eyes are set deep under the strong brow arches in the strikingly modeled skull. Strong, dense tufts of fur form the powerful mane, which reaches deep down to the back and chest. The pattern of the fur is also indicated with short lines on the animal's legs.
The statuette was found south of the settlement near the Saalburg, in the middle of the burial ground. It is therefore a beautiful testimony to the widespread custom in ancient times of offering terracotta figures to the grave of the dead.
