Description
The ram is depicted with short, curly fur and small horns that are close to the head. As the traces on the stone on the back show, it probably belonged to a larger relief.
The ram's head was found on the Roman road from Saalburg to Frankfurt-Heddernheim, the Roman Nida, in the area of the Roman cemetery. It may have belonged to a relief depicting the god Mercury, who is often depicted with a ram. Perhaps he also decorated one of the representative tombs along the street.
The style of the sculpture dates back to the last quarter of the 2nd century AD.
