Description
The massively cast head of a greyhound sat as an appliqué on the edge of a small bronze vessel. Since only a small part of the rim has been preserved, the shape of the bowl cannot be determined in more detail. A very similar dog's head is kept in the museum in Augst (Switzerland), where it forms the end of a bucket handle.
Decorative elements in the form of animals can be found on numerous everyday objects from antiquity. The viewer encounters various birds, exotic wild animals such as panthers and lions, and domestic and farm animals such as dogs, cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry as popular motifs. Mice are also more common, sitting on pot lids, for example.
