The statue of the Celtic prince

The god Mithras, dressed in a belted undergarment and a Phrygian cap, carries a bull on his back. He grabbed the living animal, whose head reached almost to the ground, by its hind legs. A tree is visible in the background.
The muscular bull has hit his tail with the small tassel on the right side of his back. The stone under the belly was probably not removed by the sculptor for greater stability.
Glauberg and its immediate surroundings have always been a popular settlement area. A settlement at the foot of Glauberg is documented as early as the time of the first Neolithic farmers, the Bandkeramic culture (approx. 5500 - 4900 BC).
The silver plate shows the central event from the cult legend of the god Mithras: In the background of a small temple, an arch indicates the grotto in which Mithras kills the bull, surrounded by seven stars.
Enjoy a panoramic view of the landscape from the burial mound of the Celtic prince from Glauberg. Taken at a time when the wooden posts of the so-called calendar building were being replaced, this 360° panorama represents a snapshot that will not be seen again for a long time.
On the Staffelberg (Upper Franconia, Bavaria), which dominates the landscape, there was already a mighty castle complex during the early La Tène period, whose residents dominated the Upper Main region.
The people we are taking a closer look at in our special exhibition “CELTEN LAND HESSEN – A new era begins” shaped the Iron Age in Germany. They founded large city-like settlements long before the Middle Ages.
